When his father King Brandolf is assassinated and his wife Adeline is taken by a mad Sorcerer, Prince Fordwin gathers his two oldest and most trusted friends—Edelle, a stoic lord; and Mirielle, a mischievous thief. Enacting an old oath they made to one another as children, he convinces them to go on a quest to save his wife and defeat the Sorcerer, despite their bitter hatred of one another. With the royal throne empty, the party leaves Fordwin’s sister, Aedwin, in charge of the Kingdom.
