Now it’s 1999, and the opulent mansions and aging industrial infrastructure that remain provide the perfect cover for a dark enterprise to toil away unnoticed—until Gray, a young aspiring playwright, finds his only friend brutally murdered. The first in a string of bizarre attacks that panic the tight-knit community.
When the Sheriff’s investigation provides no answers, Gray teams up with Madeline, an intimidating university wrestling team captain, to find out who killed their mutual friend. Using her wealthy family’s connections, they navigate a shadowy and dangerous world of secrets, espionage, and science experiments gone wrong. They uncover a vast conspiracy of clandestine research into longevity, with ties to Gray’s parents (long thought dead), leading him to wonder if they might still be alive. Meanwhile, parallel investigations by the beleaguered Sheriff and her rebellious tween daughter reveal the colossal scope of the ghastly forces at work in town.
Gray discovers the killer is a humanoid creature capable of inducing a sleepwalking-like state to lure in and paralyze its victims. He and Madeline must secure evidence of the beast's existence to save themselves and the town from a covert group trying to keep the monster hidden. The high-stakes search for the truth forces Gray to face his unresolved grief. His recurring nightmares progress, and he realizes they are memories of his parents and a medical procedure that’s left him with mysterious abilities.
