When his family flees still-burning Dresden, a five-year-old expects paradise in Allied territory, but instead must face more hardships.
A military family survives the 1945 Dresden firebombing and escapes to the Allied West. The father is a Major in the German army, but also a resistance member. The Nazis suspect his involvement in the 1944 Hitler assassination attempt and are hunting for him. The family begins the long and dangerous journey to the West. First, the Nazis are after him, but after the war’s end, the Russians are looking for German high-ranking officers.
When they finally arrive, they do not find paradise. The story is told through the wide-open eyes of a young boy (age five to eight) and covers 1945 to 1948.
This story is unique as it gives the view of the war and its aftermath through the German side.
