In 1960’s Anaheim, the Cooley family navigate a new reality after the father, Leon, a charming and volatile genius, leaves the mother, Barbara, a saintly fine artist, to care for their four children on her own. The middle daughter Clare (14) an innocent, elementary school dropout prone to escaping into her vibrant imagination, must pick up the slack around the house. But, when Clare is left pregnant by a sexual assault, everything changes.
The Life of Clare is a ten-hour family drama told from the perspective of a young girl in a dangerous environment set in Orange County, California, in 1968. Based on the book of life stories of Clare Cooley, a self-taught artist from a dysfunctional family of outcasts.
We explore each family member's different coping mechanisms to navigate the dysfunction. Our protagonist's coming-of-age story shows how creative genius can be born from adversity—a diamond formed under pressure. We journey inside the developing mind of a teenage girl and see how tragedy and struggle inform and fuel her artistry. Her imagination spills out into the world around her like augmented reality—her superpower that allows her to overcome extreme adversity.
